Some 8 miles from the county seat of Shangri-la, it is located along the same road that takes you to Pudacuo National Park. If you take a tour of the park or hire a private car, Xiagei is the usual stop on the way back to Shangri-la. More than twenty families live in this Tibetan village cum shopping center in traditional style homes. The village is meant to exhibit the colorful Tibetan culture, costumes, foods, music and festivals. The Xiagei hot spring is an excellent place to relax  after hiking the rigorous trails of Shangri-La. Complete with a large pool, several hot springs and optional accommodations, Xiagei offers travelers an enjoyable retreat away from the city and old town. In the village, artisans show people the history and process of making pottery, Tangka embroidery, wooden and yak bone carving and incense.

Statues of Sakyamuni and other figure of Tibetan Buddhism dot the landscape. Having visited Xiagei in 2007 while it was under construction. And having spent at least 5 minutes walking the grounds before departing I would give it a pass.

The cultural tourism area of Sutra Printing House of Shangri-La is namely the Xiagei Tibetan Ecological and Cultural Village on the way to Pudacuo National Park. This small village is made up of 22 Tibetan families, with captivating natural and human landscapes. Stepping into the village, one's attention will be drawn onto the typical Tibetan residences so that one can not help exploring more about the Tibetan life style, production and religion. In the village, multiple aspects of the Tibetan culture have been displayed; for example, one will find Tibetan traditional things have been well preserved, such as wood handicrafts, yak-horn crafts, Tangka scroll painting, Tibetan incense, stone carving, Tibetan silver wares, Tibetan knives, and Tibetan medicine etc--many of them are made on the spot. Some disappearing traditional techniques have also been well conserved and carried forward. Gadan Dege Lamasery The monastery is where the culture of the eight sects of Tibetan Buddhism is displayed. Displayed in the Printing House are 108 volumes of "Kah Gyur", 203 volumes of "Bstan Gyur", Tripitaka, and 162,000 plates and 6,000 sketchpads used for printing Buddhist literature; and what is on the plates includes philosophy, astronomy, geography, politics, Tibetan medicine, Buddhist classics, history, literature, music, fine art, and artistic techniques etc.
