For people who are living in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, eating insects growing in bamboo joints is a very common phenomenon. Bamboo insect is a kind of insects that parasitize the bamboo joints and mainly imbibe nourishment from stems of bamboo. Usually, they hide themselves in the thick section of a bamboo (bamboo tube) to avoid being attacked by ant. According to experienced villagers, the insects can be found in bamboos which have deformed joints or scabs and ant holes on surface of stems.
It is a good time for local people to catch the insects in mid-September of every year. As the insect is rich in protein, amino acid, it has become one of the mouthwatering dishes served at people's dinner table across the province.
