Deqin Travel Tips

Location

Deqin County is situated in the Hengduan Mountain Section, Northwest of Yunnan Province. 


Population: 60,000 


Area: with an area of 7,596 square kilometers 


Nationalities: distributing Bai, Li, Dai, Zhuang, Miao, Hui, Naxi, Yao, Tibet, Mongolia, Man, Nu, Bulang Minority Nationalities, etc. 


History: The history of Deqin could be traced back to 1372, Ming Dynasty. It was one of precincts of Yunnan. During 1648-1665, Deqin was took up by Tibet until 1727, putted under of administrate of Yunnan Province again. 


Climate: In winter, it is cold and dry in Deqin. The summers are hot owing to warm and humid monsoon winds from the southeast bringing Deqin most of its annual precipitation. January is the coldest month and July is the warmest. Winter usually begins towards the end of October. The summer months, June to August, are wet and hot with about 40% of the annual precipitation. 


Transportation: There are four buses leaving in the morning from Zhongdian. The journey takes about 5 hours and is through spectacular and scary mountain scenery. 


Buses to/from Lhasa use the main bus terminal in Deqin. But The land route from Shangri-la to Lhasa is closed for foreigners. They will not sell you a ticket even if you have the Tibet travel permit. 


Local Specialties: Local Most of the small restaurants on the main street have good food. Tibetan cured pork is worthwhile trying. All the dishes with yak meat are considered to be local 


Local Food: The local specialties of Shangre-la feathers Tibetan cuisine. cakes, Tibetan butter tea- Zanba, Pipa Meat, Saimi Lamb, Guoben Hot Pot, yogurt, and Suolima-a kind of Tibetan Liquor brewed with the highland barley etc are recommended.
