Kunming to build Yunnan's highest building

Kunming Workers Cultural Palace, standing at the Dongfeng Square in the downtown, will be demolished at the end of the month, sources from Kunming municipal government. A new building, which is predicted to refresh records of the highest tower in Yunnan, will be built up at the same location then.

It is said the height of the projected building may be 456 meters, 123 meters higher than the present top building in the downtown, "The Gate of South Asia", 333 meters high and situated on Shangyi Street.

In recent years, property developers continually compete for raising buildings' heights. In the northern Kunming, Twin Towers built at Harmony Square is 260 meters tall; in the southern Kunming within Chenggong district, the First Town of Colorful Yunnan is 288 meters high; in the western Kunming within Xishan district, Wanda Plaza Building is 300 meters high.

In the history of building development in the city, the construction of Kunming Workers Cultural Palace began in 1982. This cultural palace came into use in 1985. After 1999 appeared some skyscrapers in Kunming. At that time, Kai Sah Plaza International Hotel won the title of the top building, with a height of 150 meters. The Bank Hotel, which was placed the second in the height, was 140 meters high.

A property developer told the journalist that two reasons generate the skyscrapers. "One is that the city develops very fast; and the other is that land resources become scarcer."

"To reserve more lands for greenery and public utilities, the city will build more and more high rises and super high rises," said Sun Ping, leader of Yunnan Urban Science Research Institution.
