--Lancang River is the longest river flowing from north to south in China. It takes its source from the Zhaqu of the Guangguori Peak of Tanggula Mountain Range in Qinghai Province, China. It is called the Lancang River after it reaches Changdu. The river runs south until it leaves China at the Nanla Bay out of Yunnan Province and therefrom changes its name from the Lancang River to the Mekong River.
The Grand Canyon of the Lancang River is famous for not only its deep and long vale, but also the rushing water. The river water is limpid and rushing in winter, but turbid and onrushing in summer. As the river becoming narrow in the Grand Canyon, high waves are striking against the banks and making a sound like thunder. What a fantastic spectacle! Such steep mountains, deep valley and miraculous geographic structure are seldom seen all over the world.

--Qamdo County, located in the far eastern side of Tibetan Autonomous Region is probably the most advanced city of Tibet. Situated at an altitude of 3240M above sea level, surrounded by famous Hengduan Mountains Range and having many rivers and lakes, Qamdo is without doubt a naturalist's heaven. Qamdo is also an industrial hub thronged by enterprises and business travelers from around the world. The development of this remote city is on the full swing with many new roads coming up, making it an infrastructure advanced city.
The climate here is most unpredictable. One can experience four seasons on a single mountain itself. It is quite easy to get sick in such kind of weather conditions if required precautions are not taken, so it is better to carry all kinds of clothing with you. As a developed city, it has shopping arcades, street shops, and movie theaters. Meat is the most prominent food with Yak meat being the most popular. With its distinctive characters and vividness, Qamdo County has slowly but surely made its way to the top tourist spots in Tibet.
--Chambaling Monastery is located at the highest spot in Qamdo County, where you will get the best view of the entire city. Built in the year 1444 by one of Tsong Khapa's disciple, the temple houses few of the oldest statues of Buddha in large number. You will also find stunning work of arts in various Thangka paintings and murals. Visit this monastery during Tibetan New Year when you will see the most splendid offering of the monastery, the religious dance Guqing.
The performers wear elegant traditional clothes and expressive masks that pump in a new life to the already spectacular dance.

Jila Mountain Pass with 4350 meters ,Randaila Mountain Pass(4328M), Eyala Mountain Pass(4505M), Xiegala Mountain Pass (4503M),Zhaqu River |
It is a long driving but beautiful day. Drive from Chamdo to Riwoq County (3810M类乌齐) for your lunch, visit some Tibetan villages such as Jiduo Town, and Riwoq Town, also the Jila Mountain Pass with 4350 meters above the sea level.
From Riwoq to Xiangda Town in Nangqian County, drive through some high mountains passes such as Randaila Mountain Pass(4328M), Eyala Mountain Pass(4505M), Xiegala Mountain Pass (4503M).
--Nangchen or Nanqian is a county of Yushu in there centralize: plateau pasture, virgin forest, deep and serene canyon, thousand years old Buddhist Monasteries and myth stories. Nangchen is the county name and Sharda is the name of the county capital. Nangchen was an independent kingdom of Tibet up until the 1950's.
It was independent from Lhasa and also (very) independent from Beijing. Nangchen is rich in Tibetan history. There are several monasteries around twon. The famous Chinese Kungfu actor Jet Li spends a lot of time in Nangchen each year and is personally helping to fund the building of a new monastery there. Nangchen weather is much warmer than the rest of Yushu Prefecture, but will still be cold. You can get to Nangchen by taking a mini-van taxi from the front of the main bus station in Jyekundo for around Y30 per person.
If you want to see some nomad life it is not hard to find in Yushu Prefecture. Over 65% of the population is nomadic. I would recommend taking a mini-van taxi to the town of Drido (Zhiduo in Chinese). Drido lies 195km northwest of Jyekundo and can be easily reached by van taxi from the center square in Jyekundo. From Drido you could hike to Qumarleb which is 45 km away. Along the way, you follow the Drichu (Yangtze) River. It is very beautiful with lots of nomads.

the source of Lancang-Mekong River, the grassland and lakes, glaciers, original forest |
Enjoy the nice sunrise in Sahuteng Town, then drive along the Zhaqu River to Zhaqing Town, continue the 85KM driving to Zhaxi Qiewu, where is the exact source of the Lancang Mekong River from Zadoi to the Pacific Ocean in Cambodia. From Zhaxi Qiewu, the road is end, a horse riding is necessary to the grassland and glaciers and explore the source of Lancang-Mekong River. This day will be a fantastic day in the paradise. The Tibetan name of Lancang River is Zhaqu, it means “beautiful”. The source is located between Aduo Town and Zhaqing Town with wild grassland and lakes. Drive back to Sahuteng Town in the late afternoon.
The Lancang River originates from Zaduo County of the Yushu Prefecture, and the headwater of the river lies between the originating places of the Huanghe and Yangtze rivers. Deep gorges and wide valleys alternate with each other. On top of the hills are usually barren white interlocking rocks like wolf's fangs. In Chinese landscape painters' words, the place is endowed with both "bones and flesh." The road condition here is usually very rough, and the landform is very complex. A local guide is necessary to go to the area.

Sershul Monastery,Shiqu County,Bumnying Monastery |
Leaving Yushu the trail climbs out of the valleys back up to the high plateau, aiming southwest for Shiqu (Sershul). Shortly before town is Sershul gompa(色须寺) - a rare pink-tiled monastery. Large and obviously rich, it’s a bit more Han than Tibetan Buddhist. Back on the road to Shiqu proper, which was recently a small concrete town filled mostly with Han Chinese PLA and police, but is now a busy-ish market town, mostly Tibetan. Bumnying gompa (Gelukpa) is here, home to some 200 monks.

Tsatsa Monastery,Rinyur Monastery,Zhechen Monastery,Yilhun Lhatso Lake,Zi-chu river Gorge |
Departing Shiqu, detours worth taking if enough time include Tsatsa gompa and Rinyur gompa, as well as Zhechen gompa gotten to via a pristine mountain-lined valley. Further north and alongside the main road, set in a ‘hidden valley’, is the 17c Dzogchen gompa (Nyingma), one of the most important monasteries in Kham and a renowned school for Dzogchen teachings. Cross 4633m Muri la pass and drive through wide nomad country before arriving to the wild-west-kind-of-town of Manigange, home to Yazer gompa (Nyingma).
Leaving Sichuan-Qinghai ‘highway’, road slowly ascends, en route passing Yilhun Lhatso (4500m), a beautiful blue lake surrounded by snowy mountains, held very sacred by Tibetans as evidenced by all the mani stone piles and prayer flags. Soon after the road crests at Tro la (4916m) and the landscape changes from grassland to forests. Descend via a series of switchbacks, the trail enveloped between the steep sides of the Zi-chu river gorge before coming into Dege.
--Dege is a remote city with a long history, once the seat of the Kingdom of Dêrge, whose kings ruled this area independent of interference from either Lhasa or Beijing. Its most famous building is the Parkhang Printery, which has been the main source of printed materials for much of the Kham area. Today it’s possible to observe the monks at work, using the same age-old wood block techniques. Gonchen gompa, largely gutted, has now been restored, but with the original shell largely intact.

Pelpung Monastery,the upper Yangtze River,Katok Monastery,Pelyul Monastery |
Not a whole lot of miles covered this day, so plenty of time to make the detour to Pelpung gompa via a scenic narrow mountain road. The establishment of this 18c monastery quickly made this region the centre for the Karma Kagyüpa school. It’s been designated one of world’s most important endangered monuments by World Monuments Fund. It’s a huge complex, visible for miles from its hilltop perch. Known as the Little Potala, some reckon its architecture to be Kham’s most stunning.
Back to the main road, continue following the Yangtze to the small town of Hepo, just beyond which is another important monastery, the early 12c Katok gompa located 850m above town. Excepting Samye (near Lhasa) this is the oldest surviving Nyingma monastery, making it a hugely religiously significant site. Baiyu is a pretty Tibetan town with tree-lined streets and the river Ding-chu flowing through it. The important Pelyul gompa (Nyingmapa) is located atop a hill behind town.

Erlang Mountain Pass,Minyak Gangkar Mountain, Chengdu City |
Hit the road for an early start to this day's drive, which follows what was the old tea route between China and Tibet and is now the main military road into the TAR. The road goes via the 10-km Erlang tunnel, then crosses the 3000m Erlang pass. Lunch at Luding, site of one of the more heroic episodes of the long March. Then the road skirts north of the 7756m Minyak Gangkar (Gonggashan) to the south.
Chengdu is a huge intense city, with a history dating back to pre-Han dynasty. It has variously acted as a dynastic capital and centre of southern radicalism, before reaching its status today as provincial capital of Sichuan and home to some 6 million people. Today it carries all its history with it in the sheer complexity of its layout and culture - modern boulevards, intersected by mazes of narrow crooked side streets, traditional neighbourhoods next to high end department stores, Sichuan opera houses, the Mao statue in the main square, the street-side restaurants serving arguably some of the best food in China, the parks, Zen monastery and neighbourhood tea houses - where for centuries rebellion has been plotted.
