In the Dongba sacrificial ceremonies, Dongba Dance is one of the essential item. This dance was actually originated from Naxi’s ancestors and the dance steps were copied from their daily laboring lifestyle. Some dances depict their hunting and fighting skill while others depict animal movement. Throughout the many generations, these dances were refined and had become a unique Dongba cultural art performance..
According to historical record, this classical Dongba dance had 365 different types. However most of them were lost due to many reasons. Today only a few Dongba priest can dance well over 30 different types. The textbooks for Dongba dance were written in pictographic form, which are considered as the earliest dance books recorded in Dongba characters.
