Jinning County of Kunming is the hometown of Mr Zheng He (1371-1435), a renowned Chinese navigator in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Some 600 years ago, he led his fleet to carry out seven voyages within 28 years, visiting 37 countries and regions of Asia and Africa. These voyages improved the cultural and economic ties between China and some Asia and Africa nations, and were regarded as a wonder in the world history of voyages.
In 2005, the State Council of the PRC officially determined each July 11th as the Nautical Day of China.
In addition to the rich activities organised by Jinning County, the Kunming-based Yunnan Provincial Museum will put up theme exhibitions accordingly.
