Gate-closing Festival is spent on Sep 15th on Dai Calendar and lasts three months. It is referred to as "Jinwa" in the language of Dai people, meaning the Buddha will cultivate Buddhism in Temple.
Legend goes that each September, the Buddha goes to the West Paradise to sermon for three months. Once, in his sermon period, thousands of monks go to countryside to preach; as a result, these monks damaged the crops and peasants had lots of complaints. For “punishment”, when the Buddha goes to sermon, all the monks have to stay in temples to “confess” for three months. During “Jinwa”, the elderly Dais have to visit temples to pray on 8th, 15th, 23rd, and 30th of each month; different sacrifices are offered and every seven days a sacrificial ceremony is hold.
