Gedong Festival(格冬节), An Unusual Tibetan Experience
Gedong Festival takes place in the monastery Songzanlin each year to November 29 when the devotees of the region participate in worship and also to attend the religious dance masks: Cham dance, which are performed by monks in costume color representing deities, ghosts and animals. As mentioned in the ancient books, the movements are slow and heavy, while the masks themselves represent various gods to help cast out demons, to celebrate the harvest and pray for happiness for the coming year. - See more at:
The photography workshop will coincide with the annual event of Gedong Festival of Dongzhulin Monastery this year. Gedong Festival is one of most important events for Tibetans. During the event, the colorful mask dancing will be perfo
rmed. This dance, called Qiangmu in Tibetan, is a form of dance the people believe can please the gods, drive away bad luck, and celebrate the season. While they follow the basically identical form, each region and monastery has its own variation of the dance.
