(The "flowery drum" dance)
The "market opening", or "Kai Xin Jie" in Chinese, is a special festival of the Yi ethnic group living in E'shan County of Yuxi City. Circulating in the towns (townships) of Fuliang, Tadian, Dalongtan, Chahe and Dianzhong etc, it is set on the first market day after the Chinese lunar New Year Festival--for 2013, it is on 15 and 16 February.
(Folk artistic troupes tour along the street)
When the day has come, people from nearby will be dressed in their holiday best and swarm into the street, singing, playing various musical instruments such as trumpets and three-stringed guitar, staging flowery drum dance and dragon dance, and most importantly praying for favourable weather conditions, bumper harvests and thriving live stock.
