  • Zuojiao dance festival of the Yis, Mouding County

    In 2009, 17,200 locals took part in the grand left-foot dance of the Yi people, creating a Guinness World Record. Traditionally taking place on lunar 28 March, it is the biggest cultural event in Mouding County of Chuxiong which is the largest Yi autonomous prefecture in Yunnan Province.

  • Torch Festival of Yi Ethnic Minority, the grandest event in Aug

    Different from the Yi people, the Bai ethnic Torch Festival takes place one day later, i.e. on 25 lunar June. Originating from the historical story the Burning-down of Pinewood Pavilion during the Nanzhao Kingdom Period, the Bai ethnic Torch Festival is said to be in memory of Ms Bai Jie who was the wife of the Dengdang Tribal chieftan murdered by Pi Luoge in the fire.
