Anshun is situated in the central part of Guizhou Province and the eastern part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, occupying a total area of 9,264 square kilometers (3,577 square miles). It borders with Guiyang City that is the provincial capital of Guizhou Province to the east, near the Liupanshui City and Qianxinan Zhou region to the east, next to the Qiannan Zhou region to the south, and to the north borders with the Bijie area. Among the people here, the ethnic groups including Buyi, Miao, Hui, Gelo account for 38.4 percent of Anshun population.
Dating back to the 13th century, Anshun is an old established trading center, linking north and south China with areas as remote as Burma via Kunming. It used to be the throat way between Guizhou and Yunnan provinces since the ancient times. Historically, it was considered as 'the stomach of Qian (namely Guizhou province), the throat of Dian (namely Yunnan Province), the lips and teeth of Shu Yue (namely Sichuan and Guangdong provinces)'.
