The beautiful painted fans in Yangshuo remind visitors of the era when the first westerners explored the vast Orient. Made from fine thin paper and bamboo, these fans are drawn different theme of landscapes and lives of people in Guilin on the surface. Sometimes you can see the delicate calligraphy on the surface,too. All the pictures and calligraphy are drawn and written by local artists. The spaces in every picture are used for the classical poems. The small fans are about one foot long, and the big ones are about 1-2 meters. The framework of the fans are made of local phyllostachys pubescens and the folds of the fans are made of Chinese rice paper or silk.
