Lijiang(2400)-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge(1900)-Haba Village (2600m) |
From Lijiang, you'll drive about 60KM to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in the Stone Drum town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road running through the Lijiang valley which is filled with wheat fields and drying haystacks.
Continue the driving 40KM more to visit the the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha in this area because you can find gold in the river. Then, you'll head for the middle part of Tiger Leaping Gorge for your lunch. After a short trekking in Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, drive to Haba Village which is a small Naxi village located at the food of Haba Snow Mountain.
Arrive at Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse in Haba Village. You will prepare for your equipment and acclimatize youselfself to the altitude(2600M in Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse.) After lunch, examine your heart rate and blood oxygen content. Learn the knowledge, condition and introduction of the Haba Snow Mountain Climbing.

Activities |
Haba Village (2600m)-the Base Camp at the 4200 m of Haba Mountain |
Trek up the Haba Mountain for about 15 km to the Base Camp at the 4200 m, which will take about 7 hours, with yaks taking your luggage. You will have picnic lunch in Haba Snow Mountain. You only need to take some water, clothe, necessary food, the other equipment will be transfered by the horses to the Basic Camp.
Base camp altitude indications vary depending on whom you ask but we found it to be at about 4100 m so this is a rather long day and the path can get very muddy. Use good waterproof boots. The walk will take 4-6 hours and is mostly through the beautiful Yunann forest apart from three meadows that you will cross on the way.
Today you will hike up 1500M of the altitude, arrive at the Base Camp in the afternoon. Because of the high elevation, everyone will suffer the different altitude sickness. You should know how to adjust the situation and adapt to the high elevation. If you really feel not very well, please tell your escort.
Note: It is not allowed to sleep before 9:00 PM.
Overnight at the Base Camp or in the wooden hut(beds and quilt are availible in the wooden hut)
Option to have one more day in Acclimatization in the Base Camp 4200M.
You will spend the day to acclimatize in the base camp. Some chinese climbers and web sites are recommending a Camp 1 at 4900 m just before getting on the glacier ( a small pond/lake is located there) but it seems most people do the climb in one day up and down from base camp. This seems to be the best solution especially if you can spend one day to acclimatize in base camp. There is a nice 4 h walk going to black lake and back from base camp if you chose this
option.
--The base camp is located at the edge of the forest so ample wood supply is available and a very clean river stream flows nearby. Two hut guardian are now staying at base camp and can provide basic cooking and even some drinks ( coke etc...). Camping at base camp is confortable and free in a very nice setting plus you can take advantage of some of the hut facilities. In rainy weather however, the ground becomes very wet and it is difficult to keep the tents dry.
A new hut has recently been added to the 'historical one' these huts are still pretty basic with sod floor and open walls on the outside but the largest and most recent one can offer shelter to about 30 people while the oldest one is much smaller ( 8 max). Sleeping in the hut is on wooden plank and acceptable although it seems most people still prefer the camping solution.

--Camp1 is located just before the 2nd grey slab at about 4800 m. Usually people did not stay there but from what you could observe it seems quite unconfortable due to the very rocky and uneven surface. A small pond nearby provides water.
