The festivals of Sani people have traditional folk festivals of their own besides Lunar Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day, Dragon boat Festival, Mid-autumn Festival. The Torch Festival and Mizhi Festival are characteristic ceremony of local ethnic.
The Torch Day has a long history. It is said that a demon tread on the neck of people. A clever boy find a way to kill him. He called us up to let starving sheep whose horn bind with burning torches off and head for the house of demon. The demon killed himself because that he was afraid of being seized by people.
Therefore, Sani people regard fire as the most powerful weapon to destroy enemies. On the 24th June of lunar calendar, burning torches are a must. Besides, wrestling and bullfighting are commonly hold on. In recent years, there are feasts for ceremony of the Torch Day in the Stone Forest or Long Lake.
Mizhi Festival processes dense religious ceremony holding on the the first day which attribute horse or rat of lunar calendar. The Mizhi Festival is a day which is for worship the stone god to bless good harvest and flourish of human & animals. In that day, all men in the village go to sacrifice in holy forest all together, while, women do housework only. It is regarded as the most unique and solemn festival of Sani people of their own.
