Yunnan is home to a large number of minorities in China, many of whom are very good at making embroideries designed for costumes; Miao, Shui, Zhuang, Dai, Yao, Hani and some branches of Yi are most famous for needlework. Most of the minorities in Yunnan survive on farming, and in leisure time, they spend much time needling; sometimes one can see ladies embroidering when chit-chatting if he or she visits minority villages.
There are different ways of embroidering, and the commonly used ways are: flat embroidery, plaited embroidery, knit embroidery, wound embroidery, crape embroidery, stitching embroidery, stretching embroidery, rolling embroidery, embroidery with split thread and sticking embroider to clothes, trousers, skirts, shoes, hats, socks, scarves, handkerchiefs and belts, and even common dress and articles for daily use are embroidered with elegant figures and designs. As textile handcrafts and souvenirs, Yunnan's minorities-made embroideries are preferred a lot by Westerners.
