On Jan 4, a celebration on Wuxi Festival for 2011 was held in Kunming.
As the equal to the Lunar New Year of Chinese Han, Wuxi Festival is one of the grandest festivals spent by Pumi Minority who mainly live in Nujiang Prefecture and Lijiang Municipality in Northwest Yunnan, and has a population of some 40,000. The festival normally comes off on Lunar Dec 6,7 and 8; and Dec 8 is the beginning of the New Year of Pumi People who then enjoy 3 to 15 days by staging traditional sacrificial ceremonies, cultural performances and sport games.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, priorities have been put on the development of those sparsely-populated ethnic groups of China, which yields bumper fruits for Pumi’s economy, society and culture.
