Great Jiele Golden Pagoda is situated at Jiele Village, 7 kilometers away from Ruili Town and close to NO.320 National Road. It has a long history and has experienced eight destructions and eight reconstructions. The pagoda now was modeled in the early 1980s on its original style. It is honored as the first Buddhist pagoda in Dehong. It enjoys the same prestige as Mandele Buddhist Pagoda in Burma and is one of the most famous Buddhist pagodas in Southeast Asia. The pagoda is a Southern Buddhist pagoda built of bricks and stones. The magnificent main pagoda is 39.5 meters tall, with 16 smaller pagodas around it. All pagodas are like bottle gourds and are of a golden color.
In the past the Great Golden Pagoda had been built with joint efforts by the Chinese and Burmese people. On important occasions such as the Water Splashing Festival, there will be three-day Buddhist services for contributions and prayers. Therefore, the Golden Pagoda is a symbol of the friendship between the Chinese and the Burmese people. Thus it is honored as "a Rural Natural Park".
Great Jiele Golden Tower was built in the 17th century and consisted of 17 towers. The body of the main tower is paved with golden ceramic tiles. Around the main tower stand 16 smaller towers which are daubed with golden powder. They serve as a foil to the main tower and thus make it look even more magnificent.
The foundation of the tower is made of quadrate bluestones. The bodies of the towers are built with steel and concrete. The main tower is cone-shaped and as high as 39.5 meters. It is paved with golden ceramic tiles and has on the top a precious umbrella and a weather vane that are made from aluminum and tied with hundreds of wind-bells. Looking from far away, the shining Golden Tower hides among green trees. The wind-bells tinkle in the gentle breeze. This successful work with characteristics of Dai people reflects the unique architecture design and great artistic achievement of Dai craftsmen hundreds of years ago.
Great Jiele Golden Tower has Buddhist temples serving near by and is one of the most famous stupas in southeast Asia. Every Water-splashing Day there will hold grand Buddhist ceremonies which will last for 3 days.
