Zhongling Mountain National Forest Park is 27 kilometers away from Xundian county seat, Kunming Municipality. It covers an area of 8100 mu (equal to approximately 5.5 square kilometers) with the highest point being 2,332 meters above the sea level. Zhongling Mountain boasts dozens of natural and cultural sights. Its grotesque natural terrains have given births to such vivid sights as “36 laced drums”, “72 flags”, “spring flowers floating on the streams”, “tiger scratching itch on its back”, “sunrise and sunset”, “white horse looking at the golden bell”, and “five immortals examining the Yin and Yang” etc.
There used to be a Zhongling Buddhist Temple built in the Ming Dynasty on the mountain. It was once one of the six most famous temples in Yunnan. However, it was torched down to ashes in 1940. People today can pitifully see its ruins and 39 Buddhist stupas. The former site of Zhongling Temple covers more than 3,000 square meters, judging from which experts have agreed that it must have been a large Buddhist temple in the past. Qian Feng (1740-1795)-a renowned painter in the Qing Dynasty-once visited Zhongling Temple and composed a couplet for it.
Zhongling Mountain can be called a natural oxygen bar because of its tranquil environment and fresh air. It is also a good choice for excursion in Kunming Area. Zhongling Mountain is covered with luxuriant forests whose members are mainly Pinus yunnanensis (Burma Pine), Michelia yunnanensis, rhododendron, camellia and orchid etc. In late winter and early spring, it’s a world of camellia and rhododendrons; while in fall and winter masses of Chinese gallnut trees bear red leaves that resemble flaming clouds inlaid on the verdant lofty peaks. It must be an unforgettable experience for one to visit Zhongling Mountain in different seasons.
