The total output value of agriculture, forestry, husbandry and fishery amounted to RMB 70.353 billion yuan in Yunnan province in 2002. The contribution rate of agriculture to GDP was 0.81, and the increased value of agriculture accounted for 21.1% of GDP. The layout of agricultural areas had been further optimized, resulting in the formation of several main areas, namely: tropical and sub-tropical fruit production area with Honghe prefecture as its center; rubber, tea production area with Xishuangbanna, Simao and Lincang as its center; sugar, coffee, aromatics production area with Lincang, Baoshan, and Dehong as its center; Yunnan medicine production area with Wenshan as its center; and the area of flowers in tropical, temperate and frigid zones with Xishuangbanna, Kunming, Yuxi and Lijiang as its center.

1. Grain:
The cultivation area covers 62.409 million mu, making up 69% of total plantation area. The total output volume of grain is 14.863 million tons, ranking the sixth in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of the country’s western region.

2. Oil:
The cultivation area covers 2.745,5 million mu, and the oil output is 0.276,6 million tons, ranking the tenth in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of the country’s western region.

3. Sugarcane:
The planting area covers 4.427,1 million mu, and the output is 14.811 million tons, taking the second place in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of the country’s western region.

4. Tea:
Yunnan is the original home to tea trees in the world. Tea plantation of the province covers an area of 2,493 million mu, and the output of tea in 2002 was 80,700 tons, ranking the first in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of the country’s western region and the fourth in the country. The main tea plantations are located in the west and southwest of Yunnan and the main brands of tea are: "Yunnan Pu’er", "Yunnan Tuocha", "Dianhong" (Yunnan Black Tea), " Dianlu" (Yunnan Green Tea) and "Yunnan Wulong". Tea products in Yunnan are characterized by their refinement, fragrance, strong flavor and sweet taste after drinking.

5. Rubber:
Yunnan is one of the main rubber growing areas, and its output in 2002 amounted to 0.173,1 million tons.

6. Meat and aquatic products:
In 2002 the total output of pork, beef and mutton reached 2.038,4 million tons, and aquatic products totaled 0.180,2 million tons.

7. Vegetables:
Yunnan is one of the five major vegetable commercial production bases in our country. The huge amount of vegetables not only can satisfy the needs of the province, but can also supply the markets at home and abroad, and they have become very important agriculture products for export in Yunnan province. In 2002 the cultivation of vegetables covered an area of 3.157,5 million mu in the province with a total output of 7.503 tons.

8. Fruit:
The main fruit are grape, passionflower, banana, apple, pear, citrus, pineapple, longan, mango etc. In addition, Yunnan has developed a series of tropical and sub-tropical fruit products with distinctive Yunnan characteristics and the output totaled 0.984,3 million tons in 2002. The province introduced 13 excellent species of brewery grapes from France in 1997, and after years of trial cultivation in Mengzi, Mile, Yongren, Dongchuan, they have been used for producing grape wine this year, and have proved to be as good as French grapes in quality. The plantation of grape covers an area of 65,000 mu in the province, and two large-scale breweries and two bottling plants have been constructed in Mile County. The annual production and bottling capacity of dry grape wine has reached 45,000 to 60,000 tons.

9. Tobacco:
The flue-cured tobacco plantation covers an area of 5.222 million mu in the province, with a total output of 0.600,8 million tons ranking the first in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of China’s western region. Currently, Yunnan has a production capacity of 8 million boxes of cigarette and 13 million dan of double smoked flue-cured tobacco leaves.

10. Forestry:
Yunnan province abounds in forest resources, and is one of the important bases of forestry in China. Forests cover a vast area of 10 million hectares in the province, ranking the fourth in the country, and they are capable of retaining 1.4 billion cubic meters of water, taking up China’s third place. The annual growth of timber amounts to 4 to 5 million cubic meters and the volume of commercial timber reaches 2.7-3.5 million cubic meters annually, so there is abundant supply of raw materials for the development of a series of forest products. Besides, Yunnan is also one of provinces that are rich in bamboo resources.
Yunnan, situated in the sub-tropical zone, has a great variety of forest resources. In particular, it is renowned for the variety and high quality of broadleaf forests that can be developed and utilized for a series of forest products. There is a large number of fast-growing trees of economic types, so there is great potential for the development of paper-making and other related industries. However, the province had a relatively late start in the construction of commercial forest bases, so at present the total output value of forestry only amounts to RMB 11 billion yuan in the province.
