Yunnan Sugarcane Research Institute (YSRI) is subordinated to Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS). YSRI, was founded in 1956, located in the Eastern Lingquan Road 363, Kaiyuan (latitude: 22 ° 34 ″ N, altitude: 1050M , mean temperature 19.7 ¡æ , annual rainfall: 820mm , annual mean relative humidity: 72%). Sugarcane crossing and breeding station in Ruili was established in 1988. YSRI has built the National Nursery of Sugarcane Germplasm Resources in China .
Now, there are 110 staff members in YSRI, including 15 senior researchers, 60 medium and primary researchers. YSRI is made up of six
sections: breeding section, agronomy section, breeding station in Ruili, administration office, scientific research management section, and science & technology exploit center. There are 30ha areas in YSRI. It possessed of scientific research installations such as greenhouse ( 800m 2 ), plastic shed ( 2400m 2 ), net house, photoperiod house, and scientific research equipment such as nucleic acid and protein analyzer, thermocycler, refrigerated centrifuge, atom-absorbed spectrophotometer, soil and sucrose measure equipment.
Meantime, YSRI has established heredity laboratory, physiology and biochemistry laboratory, disease and insect laboratory, nutrition and soil fertilizer analysis laboratory. YSRI has technique conditions for developing deep-seated sugarcane research.

Yunnan Sugarcane Industry Yunnan province Yunnan in southwest China is one of the major sugar producing area in P.R.China, next only to Guangxi which is the top sugarcane and sugar producer.
Yunnan is the second largest sugar-bearing base. Over the years, relying on rich hot zone land resources, good natural conditions, vigorously develop sugar cane production and processing of sugar-bearing, Yunnan cane sugar industry has made the remarkable achievements.
According to statistics, Over the past five years, 300,000ha of sugarcane had been planted annually in Yunnan, increasing 5% per year than previous 5 years; sugar production was around 1800,000 tons; agricultural production value reached to about US$ 330 million.
There are 87 sugarcane product lines available, and 33,000 workers and 6 million farmers support the sugarcane industry in Yunnan . The total processing capacities is around 150,000 tons per day. Sugarcane planted in western Yunnan ( prefecture of Dehong , Baoshan, Lingcang) and southern Yunnan (Xishuanbanna, Yuxi, Honghe) has become the predominance of cane sugar industry in Yunnan . A sound industrial system collecting raw materials (sugar cane) cultivation, processing, trade, equipment manufacturing, scientific research, education, has been formed.
