Fenshuiling Nature Reserve is situated in Jinping County, southeast of Yunnan Province, and was firstly established in 1986. It covers an area of 42,000 hectares, accounting for about 11 percent of the total territory of Jinping County. In July 2001, it was promoted into a state-level nature reserve by the State Council. It includes mainly some forest ecosystem and some rare or endangered animals such as black gibbon, slow Loris.
Ailao Mountain stretches from north to south and brings forth the formation of the natural watershed of Honghe River (Red River) and Tengtiaojiang River in its northeast and southwest respectively. The reserve has deep valleys with the sharpest difference being 1557 meters; the annual average temperature is approximately 18 degrees Celsius but with a plentiful rainfall of 2,300 millimeters yearly. Major rivers inside are Mala River, Bai River and Jinping River etc.
The largest and best-preserved primitive latifoliate forests of China exist in Fenshuiling Nature Reserve where fauna and flora species under state protection include plants of 37 families, 72 genera and 105 species, beasts of 9 orders, 29 families and 120 species, 91 species of amphibious reptile animals, and 338 species of birds. There are 32 species of endangered beasts; 8 species of amphibious reptile animals and 58 species of birds under key protection. Some are (1)-flora: tree ferns, Fokienia hodginsii (Fokien cypress), rhoiptelea chiliantha (horse tail tree), Chinese tulip tree, rehderodendron macrocarpum, primeval marattioid ferns, Dacrycarpus imbricatus (chicken-feather pine), big-fruit manglietia, manglietia insignis, manglietia megaphylla, terminalia, and fagus hayatae (beech) etc; (2)-fauna: black gibbon, slow Loris, peacock pheasant, guanna (giant lizard), python, Chinese pangolin, black bear, sambar deer (water deer), zibet, and silver pheasant etc.
