The Baohua Township is located in the middle southern part of the Honghe County, 37 kilometers away from the county seat. The total area of the township is 121 square kilometers and the township has abundant land, forest and water resources. In the township, mountains are lofty and valleys are deep. The altitudes of the mountains are between 700 and 2436 meters. The climate of the township is warm, rainfall is moderate and the percentage of forest cover is quite high. The annual mean temperature is 13.7℃ and the annual precipitation is 1485.3 mm. The township has rich and abundant natural resources. The township has six administrative districts, 61 villages, 81 resident teams, and its total population is 23,704. Three nationalities of the Hani, Yi and Han live in this township. The Baohua Township has the colorful folk customs, time-honored Hani culture, splendid terraced field, Amushan Mountain covered by dense virgin forest, clean Qingshui River, scenic Luokongjian Mount as well as a demonstration ecological tourism village with dense folk flavor: Longjia Village.
“If you have never been to the Sama Dam, you will never know how large the terraced field is.” The terraced field known as the largest of the world is located in the Baohua Township, 38 kilometers far from the county seat. The total area of the terraced field is more than 14,000 mu. The terraced field has more than 4,300 terraces in total, the altitude of the lowest terrace is 600 meters and the altitude of the highest is 1,880 meters. According to historical records, the terraced field within the Honghe County was carved out by the people led by the chief Wu Bangpo. Up to now, it is already more than 600 years old. The 14,000-mu terraced field belongs to four townships and 21 villages and is the food source to more than 40,000 people. The terraced field has different sceneries in different seasons. In the spring, it is all green. In the autumn, it is all golden. In the winter, the terraces are like countless mirrors and look amazing. Especially, if you are enjoying the sunrise in the morning in this place, you will be feeling like being in a dream. It is an agricultural ecological system consisting of the forest, village, terraced field and water as well as a harmonious social system where people of various nationalities living together. The Sama Dam terraced field is the only scenic spot where the tourists can see all the terraces by standing at a single point.
The Longjia Village is located 1.7 kilometers to the southeast of the government of the Baohua Township. The original name of the village was Longxiang Village (meaning “dragon flying”). The current name Longjia means the “place where the rainbow is” in the Hani language. It was the office of the last chief of the Luokong. The village is a pure Hani nationality village and has 105 households, 435 residents and 654 mu of farmlands. Behind the village is the high Luokongjian Mount. On the foot of the village is the splendid Sama Dam terraced field. The village is completely surrounded by green forest and a clean and clear stream flows through the village. The buildings of the village are typical Hani-style buildings. The village is neat and clean and the villagers are kind. The village was appraised as a demonstration well-off village by the government of the county in 2003 and was appraised as a demonstration ecological tourism village by the publicity department and civilization office of the prefecture. Behind the village, there is a quiet, beautiful and dreamlike garden hidden in the mountain. In the garden, you could see vegetable plots, various kinds of fruits, wild vegetable and a mountain spring. If you are tired, you could sit down in this park and enjoy the delicious food here. That is a really good choice.
