Historically, Zhaotong was the gathering place of businessmen in the northeast of Yunnan Province. Standing as an important gateway in NE Yunnan, it used to serve as a goods and materials collecting and distributing centre between Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces.
For over 200 years, the old town of Zhaoyang has incorporated the quintessence of official architectures, temple architectures and folk residences, creating a diversified local architectural style that is highlighted mainly by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) architectures--and also embodies the styles of the Minguo period (the Republic of China, 1912-1949) and Chinese-Western architectures.
