However charming and traditional such sights are,though,they are not Yunnan main draw.Rather,it is the ethnic mosaic.Over 12 million of the people belong to one branch or another of 24 different minority nationalities,comprising in the melange in the region.Racially and lingustically,the majority are Tibet-Burman peoples,such as the Yi(the most numberous,but divided into over 25 sub-groups),Hans, Naxi,Jingpo,Tibetan,Lahu,Lisu and so on.Dai and their ethnic cousins the Zhuang inhabit the south,Miao and Yao the Southeast hills,Wa and Bulang-Mon-Khmer people the southern jungles.Bai live in the old Nanzhao domain,while the Hui left over from Kublai Khan conquering armies,inhabit various parts of the Yunnan province.A contigent of residual Mongols,with a much altered lifestyle occupy a few villages near Tonghai,central Yunnan.A great variety of lifestyle haracterises minority culture,for different nationalities inhabit diverse environment.In the southern prefectures,basically two material cultures exist,that of rice-growers in in the plains(Dali,Han,Zhuang) and tea or dry rice cultivators in the forested hills(Hani,Lahu,Jinuo,Wa,Jingpo),some of whom still practice slash-and-burn agriculture.
