In summer, assorted mushrooms are available all around Kunming. It is estimated that up to 800 different kinds of edible wild mushrooms are harvested in Yunnan. Most restaurants get used to stock a few dozen fresh varieties at any given time. The “classics” of Yunnan mushrooms are boletus genus, of which the most famous one in Western cuisine is the porcini, matsutake, Zhusun (Dictyophora indusiata), Qingtoujun (Green Mushroom or Russula virescens), and Jizong (Collybia Mushroom) etc.
Kunming’s Guanshang area is the favorite place of people who like mushrooms a lot. It’s recommended to try wild hot pot in this area, especially in winter.
