Wenbi (Calligraphy Brush) Mountain is called Fununa in the local dialect meant by the black silver stone mountain. About 4, 350 meters above the sea level, the mountain stands to the south of the famous Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The Chinese people believe that mountain and water should be integrated as a whole; therefore, the mountain and the pool constitute a piece of typical Chinese landscape. The whole scenic spot falls into 12 parts with the Wenfeng Temple at its core. Standing at the central hinterland of the Wenbi Mountain, the ancient temple, originally built in the fourth year of the Reign of Emperor Qianlong, 1739 A D.
At that time Gemageju (white sect of the Tibetan Lamaism), the four High-ranking monks, visited and preached in Lijiang. During their stay, they asked the local government to advocate Buddhism and sponsor the construction of the temple. The construction last for five years. In the eighth year of Emperor Daoguang's reign, 1828 AD, the main hall was renovated and the temple was given a Tibetan name of Sangnajiazuolin, which means the Lama Temple on the secret religious holy land and land of good luck. Later the temple was renamed Wenbi after the Wenbi Mountain nearby. In its prime time, the number of monks in the temple hit several hundred.
