Going north from the Sweet Sea Meadow for about 5 kilometers, from where the road is crooked, a river can be seen at the foot of the mountain, flowing from the north all the to the east. This is the White Water River. After crossing the bridge, tourists can have a rest here, or they may walk along the path from the right side of the bridge, arriving at the bank of the river.
The river water is from the melting snows, which was filtrated by the rocks and come out as springs. If you step into the water, the river water will chill you to the bone. This feeling will make you remember forever the quality of springs from the snow mountain. The water in the river has not been polluted. Stones at the bottom of the river have turned into white color because of being washed by the river for ages. The water flows on the top of these white stones looks even more lucid. Hence the name the White Water River.
Your second impression is its beauty and miracle. There are layer by layer of waterfalls in the course of the river. There’s a lush growth of plants along the two sides of the river, setting of by the white snow peaks from far away north. The White Water River is winding its way from the deep snow mountain. You can go against the current on food or by riding on a horse, appreciating sceneries along the banks, exploring the original process of water formation, and tasting the naturally purified water, bringing home with you the feeling of freshness and coolness. The White Water River joins another river not very far from the bridge. Water in that river also comes from springs of melted snow. The water is also clear and purified. Most of the stones on the bottom of the river turn to be black, turning the water on the top into black. Hence the name the Black Water River. The river is called the Black and White Water River after the converging.
The local Naxi people have special passion about the Black and White Water River, because the water comes from the snow stored in the mountain for hundreds and thousands of years. “NuBanNuRao”, a volume of Dong Ba scripture, explained everything in the world by the color of black and white. The book pointed out that if Yin and Yang, the two opposing principles in nature, were in harmonious proportion, if the black and white could not be distinguished from each other, there would be harmony and order in the world. The Black and White Water River in front of you is a river of nature and love. To the tourists, this river meant that if you walk on, there will be no obstruct on the way; if you want to cross the river, there would be no barriers; if you travel, you are safe and lucky.
