Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, where the legendary "Shangri-la" is located, is now holding the 6th Kangba Arts Festival and the prefecture's 1st Ethnic Unity Festival.
During the five-day event that began on Monday, a series of colorful activities will showcase the rich natural and cultural heritages of the area and other Kangba areas. And just maybe, if the organizers get their wish, it will propel the development of local tourism as well.
Diqing, situated in a delta where northwest Yunnan borders Sichuan and Tibet, is one of the Kangba areas. Kangba is a branch of the Tibetan Ethnic Minority, mainly distributed in the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and some regions of Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai Provinces.
This year's festival is jointly hosted by the local governments of the Diqing, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai, Changdu in eastern Tibet Autonomous Region and Ganzi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province.
The opening ceremony was a cultural extravaganza of folk song and dance, many of which have been practiced for hundreds of years. The festival also incorporates a series of cultural and economic events including Kangba art performances, a tourism forum promoting Shangri-la travel, and several exhibitions on Kangba culture.
Located in the heartland of the world natural heritage site "the-three-parallel-river" area, Diqing is a favorite destination for tourists and backpackers the world over. It is anticipated that the festival will increase the popularity and reputation of the Kangba culture and Shangri-la tourism.
