Lacquer wares are widely used by such ethnic groups of Yunnan province as the Dai, Tibetan and Yi.
Dai ethnic lacquers: Betel-nut box and baskets etc
Made bamboo baskets or boxes are used as the moulding bed, and then pasted up with tung oil.
Inner sides of these containers are at first painted vermilion; then designed with golden patterns; and finally embossed with patterns such as ripple-like lines, flowers, and peacocks etc. Dai lacquers of this kind appear quite magnificent and exhibit high value of appreciating.
Tibetan lacquers
Bowl, liquor/wine vessels, wood box, tea set, and other containers. Main colours are golden, red, black and white.
Yi ethnic lacquers
The technique of lacquer-making of the Yi ethnic minority has remained vital in a primitive and unsophisticated manner. Take Ninglang County for example, Yi ethnic lacquer wares there have enjoyed a wide popularity among both the Yi and Han nationalities.
