Jianchuan County of Dali Prefecture is regarded as the "Hometown of Woodcarvings in China". Its wood carving has enjoyed a long history of more than 1,000 years.
Mr Duan Guoliang, born in 1949 and a member of the Bai ethnic minority, has been devoted to wood carving for over four decades. His achievements in this field have made him a forerunner of the art of Jianchuan wood carving.
Mr Duan is adept at making furniture with woodcarvings, murals and screens, and marble classic furniture. He gives the utmost vividness to plants, animals, waters and mountains, people, myths and historical stories on his works, thus adding much to the charm of Jianchuan wood carvings and boosting the development of the entire industry of the county.
In 1998, 2001, and 2006 respectively, he was honoured "Industrial Artist", "Senior Industrial Artist", "Industrial Master Artist of Yunnan Province" and "Industrial Master Artist of China".
