Wood carving in Jianchuan County, Dali, is a 1,000-year-old traditional trade; as early as Nazhao and Dali Kingdoms periods in the Tang and Song dynasties, craftsmen there created the reputed grottos in Shibao Mountain. One old saying goes that in the northwest of Yunnan, Lijiang Baba cake and Heqing liquor are quite famous, but Janchuan prides on its carpenters.
On the basis of inheriting the tradition, craftsmen in Jianchuan have innovated series of new products which include classic furniture, wooden handcrafts, classic architectural decorations; with its perfect traditional workmanship, Jianchuan wooden carvings turn out to be exquisite, elegant and pretty, and belong to typical Bai minority art integrated with those of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
In 1986, during her visit to Yunnan, one Nine Dragon furniture set was offered to the British Queen ElizabethⅡas a special gift from Yunnan; in 1996, Jianchuan was bestowed as Hometown of Wood Carvings by the National Culture Department of China.
