Jinping Mount Scenic Area is located in the painting-like Jinping Mount, 10 kilometers to the north of the seat of the Mile County. It is also on the extension line of the Kunming-Hekou Highway, 130 kilometers from Kunming and 40 kilometers from the Stone Forest Scenic Spot. The Mile County is known as the Lucky Place in the Yunnan Province. The Maitreya Buddha Temple of the Mile County is a renowned scenic spot too.
“No matter how high the mountain is, its name will spread far and wide if there is immortal.” The Jinping Mount is not high, but its landscapes are very unique, strange, beautiful and splendid. Looking at it from a far place, it is like a huge folding screen protecting the fertile and beautiful land. Looking at it from a close place, it is like a Maitreya Buddha statue designed by the nature blessing all creatures. The nature is really a great designer, putting an outdoor statue of 19.99 meters high on the heart of the mount and making mount a real Maitreya Buddha mount.
The Maitreya Buddha Temple is a temple worshipping the Maitreya Buddha, who is a famous figure in the Buddhism. According to sutras, the Maitreya Buddha was the successor of Sakyamuni and a sutra listener beside him. However, the happy Maitreya Buddha in Chinese temples came from the Bag Monk living in the end of the Tang Dynasty. According to a legend, the Maitreya Buddha had a dream on a day in the Song Dynasty. In the dream, he saw a mount in the south of China which looked like himself sitting down and the chief of the tribe living in the mount was also called Maitreya. Then, the Maitreya Buddha started to look for this mount. One day, he was tired and therefore stopped to have a rest on a road beside the Jinping Mount. Then, has fell asleep and saw a small monk smiling and walking towards him. The monk looked like himself very much. After he woke up, he realized that the Jinping Mount was the place he was looking for. Therefore, he settled himself down in the Jinping Mount and starting spreading sutras there. He went away several years later. In order to memorize him, local monks built this Maitreya Buddha Temple. The temple does not have walls, standing for that “the powers of the Buddha are unlimited.” The down-up stairs to the temple stand for that “people always move up.”
