Angmatu is the New Year Festival of the Hani ethnic minority, most of whom live in Honghe and Xishuangbanna prefectures in the south of Yunnan. It is the time the Hanis offer sacrifices to their sacred protectors of villages, and pray for bumper harvest and rainfalls for coming years.
What is the “street banquet”?
During the festival, each family must prepare yellowish glutinous rice, coloured-eggs (boiled eggs, preserved eggs, and salted eggs), smashed pork, chicken, duck, dried beef, steamed pork, and peanuts etc. There are in total at least 40 kinds of genuine, indigenous Hani ethnic household delicacies served at the “street banquet”. And the banquet is organised on a set street, with each family serving one to two tables of food so the banquet is as long as 700 meters to bring in a grand view.
