Twenty-three backpackers who went missing in a mountainous scenic spot in central China have returned unscathed on Sunday night some 30 hours after they lost contact with the outside world, rescuers said.
Rescuers succeeded in contacting these backpackers at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, more than 30 hours after they were reportedly out of contact. The 23 tourists, including two women, walked out of Longjinxi scenic spot on their own near the Three Gorges Dam in Hubei Province at 8:00 p.m. Sunday.
Ten of these tourists are veteran hikers. They are well-equipped for the 15-km excursion along valleys and rivers, but lost communication with the outside due to storm.
Police in the city of Yichang received a report Saturday night from a bus driver who said that his passengers had not returned from the scenic spot near the Three Gorges Dam.
More than 100 people, including municipal police and fire fighters, joined the search efforts.
