The Palace Museum will initiate a pilot program to handle the overwhelming crowds, offering half-price tickets after 2 pm. A trial of the new pricing schedule will be held from September 12th to 14th.
From ten in the morning till one in the afternoon is considered "rush hour" at the Palace Museum, which is hoping to encourage visitors to come in the afternoons to relieve congestion. However, the discount tickets will not cover entry to specialized exhibitions.
Built from 1406 to 1420, the Palace Museum is one of China's most important cultural heritage sites, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Last year the Museum welcomed about 14-million visitors, making it the most visited museum in the world.
