Adjutant storks reappeared in Mengzi

A rare species of lesser adjutant storks(秃鹳) which have disappeared in China for over half a century are recently found living in Changqiaohai（长桥海) wetland in Mengzi（蒙自）, the capital city of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture（红河哈尼族彝族自治州）of Yunnan province.

The stork birds, listed as vulnerable species by World Conservation Union, mainly scatter in regions of South-east Asia and South Asia. There are 6,500-8,000 lesser adjutant storks on the earth, and they were recorded inhabiting in Yunnan over 60 years ago.

Except for the lesser adjutant storks live in Mengzi, 500 Asian open-billed storks which may be the largest single wild bird group in China, and 18 glossy ibis(Plegadis falcinellus), another rare species in the world, also dwell in Changqiaohai wetland, according to a survey from Yunnan Wild Birds Association(云南野鸟会).

It is agreed by Yunnan’s bird lovers that Changqiaohai wetland has become a very important habitat for large birds and migratory waterfowl. People shall attach more attention to protect those rare species living there.
