The opening ceremony of the first Greater Mekong sub-region (GMS) Business Forum and the second GMS Commodity Fair was held Tuesday (July 23) at Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center.
GMS cooperation began in 1992. The member countries are China, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Last year, China's foreign trade with GMS countries grew by 18 percent while its overall foreign trade increased by 6.2 percent.
The forum has attracted more than 100 experts and scholars from Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Thammasat University of Thailand, Development Research Center of the State Council in China, Yunnan University, Kunming University of Science and Technology.
Jin Kunping, vice-chairman of Yunnan Social Science Association, said that China and ASEAN countries, especially countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion, are geographical neighbors and culturally connected with a long history of friendly contacts.
The second GMS Commodity Fair will last till July 29. Over 600 exhibitors from GMS countries, ASEAN, Africa, Korea and China take part in the fair. There are more than 1100 booths.
Besides, music and dance performances from Southeast Asia and the Muay Thai Vs San Shou (Kung Fu) Show will be staged during the 7-day event.
