Every Mid-autumn Festival and China’s National Holiday see the newly-issued stamps, especially stamps printed with flowers. Yunnan has been known for its flower species such as the magnolia flower, meconopsis and paphiopedilum. Many native flowers are prototypes of patterns on the stamps.
Orchid, peony, lotus flower, chrysanthemum, plum blossom, narcissus, azalea, camellia and sweet-scented osmanthus constitute the Top Ten Chinese flowers.
Chrysanthemum was the first mentioned species branded on the stamps in China on December 10, 1960. About 35 years later, on April 14 1995, the sweet-scented osmanthus-themed stamps were born.
China Post office issued a set of orchid-themed stamps, four pieces for one set on March 5, 2013. The modeling sample of the pattern was the orchid in Eryuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan. It was unveiled to the public in Kunming for the first time.
Special service stamps with meconopsis were issued on September 19, 2004. This set of stamps includes four pieces, three of their prototypes were from Yunnan.
Special service stamps with paphiopedilum, including paphiopedilum malipoense, P. dianthum, P. appletonianum and P. markianum were published to market on September 28, 2001. Yunnan has been a distributing center of paphiopedilum both in China and around the world. As many as 14 kinds of paphiopedilums originate from Yunnan.
