The State Council of the PRC issued a reply to Yunnan Provincial Government on 18 May, ratifying Huize as a state-level historic and cultural city of China.
Huize, about 200km from Kunming, is under the jurisdiction of Qujing City in the northeast of Yunnan Province. It abounds in historical relics and densely-distributed ancient streets; and the traditional layout and appearance of the town have been well preserved.
Historically, Huize is bestowed as the “Copper City in South China”, as it was famed for copper exploiting, refining and transporting (to Beijing).
In the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), throngs of Han Chinese from Central China entered Huize. What was brought in with them has conduced to the multi-cultural background. And the former commercial guild halls of several provinces of China have been well kept.
