Tom, from the States, is living in Kunming and will settle down here. He arrived in Kunming for a short-term teaching project 4 years ago at 60 years old. Later he returned to his hometown in Dallas, sold out all his belongs and settled down in Kunming three weeks later.
Tom met the reporters in his apartment. There were two eye-striking things on this sofa: sugar-coated haws on a stick and a box of flower cakes, a local snack in Yunnan.
He said, a Chinese lady gave him some snacks as gifts because, in her eyes, he was lonely. Tom said that he himself never feels lonely in China as he likes the life here. "It’s my home."
Tom used to be a salesman of softwares and technical training instructor in the USA. He said that he worked desperately hard and his total flight mileage was equivalent to 173 times of the earth perimeter. He earned about 100,000 yuan a month fifteen years ago. But now, he has a different target. “We have only one chance to do something meaningful. If you fail to follow your heart to do what you want to do, you may lost the second chance.” He has listed reasons for leaving from America and living in China.
Tom is now a college teacher in Kunming. He can find many snacks around the campus, such as the fried potatoes, barbecues, milk tea and steamed er’si, a shred rice-made cake. This is one of the temptations for his stay in the city. Strolling around the Green Lake Park in urban Kunming adds a lot of fun to his life here. Taking the No.84 bus and looking at people in ethnic groups’ costumes are quite interesting. The rich ethnic culture is also a reason for his choice of the life here.
