Jiang Yutian, as the prominent man in Yunnan's ceramic arts industry, is an inheritor of pottery arts of intangible cultural heritage protection in Xishan District.
Located at Zongshuying (Danxia Road), Kunming, Jiang's pottery-making workroom attracts a lot of young people.
In his workroom, reporters saw a ceramic-made ashtray that looks like kind of female sexual organs. "Are you embarrassed?" Jiang asked. He told the reporters that his pottery works have integrated the craftsmanship of folk artisans in Yunnan and tribal elements of Africa. There are also some totems of ethnic group. His source of inspiration is from life experience.
His pottery works include ornaments, pendants, characters, animals, plants, and sundries. Most of his works based on weird-looking and strong folk styles.
Jiang, 50-year-old, has been engaging in pottery arts for 20 years. He said pottery making is not only a skill but also an art form. He worked at industrial arts factories, printing and carton plants. He had visited Qujing, Luliang, Huaning in the province to learn pottery-making skills from some elderly artists.
He started to make pottery products based on figures of some common home supplies, such as: table lamps, arm chairs, tea plates and souvenir boxes. He thought that artworks can be used to all aspects of lives, rather than home decorations only.
Jiang introduced that pottery making is simple. Usually, he collects mud at some construction sites. When making pottery, he shapes the slurry into the desired appearances and sizes them by using prepared model. Once the pottery is complete, he will decorate and fire it. There are two kilns in his workroom. It usually takes 72 hours to bake until it is dry.
At present, Jiang’s pottery works are mainly sold as tourism products in Kunming. He also gets the orders from other provinces in China and Southeast Asia.
