The temple fair held in Jindian (The Golden Temple) Park has been included in the list of the Yunnan's intangible cultural heritage this month.
At present, the local governmental agency is striving for listing it as one of national intangible cultural heritages in China.
From the eighth day to tenth day of the first month(in lunar calendar) every year, local residents of Kunming will participate in a temple fair in Jindian Park, a travelers' destination with more than 300 years of history.
The golden temple was first built in 1602 during the Ming Dynasty. In 1671, the temple was rebuilt by Wu Sangui, a general of the Ming Dynasty and also known as King Pingxi (the King Pacifying Western Territory).
For now, Jindian has the biggest ancient-bronze structure in China, and also the national 4A level scenic spot as well as China's key cultural relic protection unit.
The Golden Temple Fair is a folk festival evolved from grand ritual activities. Jindian was a Taoist temple in ancient times. According to legend, people take part in kinds of ritual activities for celebrating the birthday of Jade Emperor (the Supreme Deity of Taoism) every year.
Probably several hundred years after, the ritual activities have been become the traditional temple fair.
"In fact, Jindian Temple Fair possesses more than 300 years of history", said Gao Yunfei, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center of Panlong District, Kunming.
Why is the temple fair at Jindian Park so popular? First of all, from the 8th to 10th days of the first month every year, Kunming enjoys a pleasant climate with beautiful sunshine, but the other cities in China are cold in winter.
Secondly, camellia flowers in full bloom everywhere around Jindian Park attracted a lot of visitors. Thirdly, folk performances are staged at the temple fair during this time.
Besides, various local foods can be tasted. Some handicrafts, such as: hand crochet, bamboo products and embroidery works, are exhibited there.
Gao said that going to the Jindian Temple Fair has become well-known folk traditional custom in Kunming. According to incomplete statistics, in recently years, the number of visitors to the fair has exceeded 100,000.
