Construction of Lugu Lake Airport has accelerated. The airport is expected to open in Oct 2015, according to Carnoc.com (Civil Aviation Resource) on Feb 14.
The construction of Lugu Lake Airport started on April 24, 2013. To date, the project has handled problems related to soft ground and funnel caves. It has finished the earthwork project, the construction of a 434-meter box culvert, the terminal and the drainage ditch. Lugu Lake Airport has received an investment of 553 million yuan ($92 million).
Approximately 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Lijiang, Lugu Lake is located on the Yunnan-Sichuan border. It is generally reached from the Yunnan side by bus or car from Lijiang, though mudslides and flooding often make roads impassable. In recent years, the lake has become popular among tourists, but it still lacks the appropriate traffic infrastructure to accommodate visitors. Tourists will be able take a nonstop journey once Lugu Lake Airport is completed instead of transferring flights in Lijiang.
The airport is projected to handle between 1.5 million and 2 million passengers annually. The airport's construction would reportedly coincide with a local government plan to build the area into a "tourist town".
