The earliest bamboo fossils, from 15.97 to 11.61 million years ago, in China were discovered in a river valley near Ailao Mountain, Zhenyuan County, southwest of Yunnan Province.
According to researchers of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, fossils of the bamboo leaves and poles have been well-preserved at the western slopes of the valley. These fossils originated from Miocene Series(about 15.97 to 11.61 million years ago).
The discovery indicates that the bambusoideae has evoluted for a long geological time and the differentiation time in Yunnan is earlier than the Middle Miocene. Yunnan is a center for the biodiversity of bamboos on the world. The discovery of the fossils provides important information for the biogeography of bamboos.
The only reliable record of bamboo fossils in China was the bamboo of the Pliocene Series(about 2.48 to 3.40 million years ago) which were found in Xundian Hui and Yi Autonomous County, northeast of the province.
