A male white rhinoceros was born at Shilin Longhui Wildlife Research Center in Kunming on July 13. It is the first bottle feeding white rhinoceros born in Yunnan.
Yunnan's history as a habitat for rhinos ended in 1933 when the last two rhinos were hunted down, but this situation has been changed now.
On July 14, reporters came to the center and saw that the baby rhino found the "right spot" and began to suckle leisurely. “We named the baby rhino ‘Shi Tou (Stone)’,”a breeder said.
Shi Tou, weighing around 40kg, is fed by its mother. His mother, Lyna, was born in South Africa and arrived in Yunnan in May 2011. She is eight years old.
The breeding center of white rhinos was built at Shilin in 2010, with a total investment of 100 million yuan. “At present, the center covers an area of 2000 mu (133.33 hectares). Nearly 80 white rhinos from Africa live here. The center is the largest white-rhino breeding base in China,” the breeder told reporters. For now, there are 8 pregnant rhinos at the center.
Rhinoceros is a group of five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae. Two of these species are native to Africa and three to Southern Asia. Members of the rhinoceros family are characterized by their large size. They are some of the largest remaining megafauna, with all of the species able to reach one tonne or more in weight.
